Etsy fees in India: processing, Payoneer, GSTIN and tax withholding

For a seller in India the fee percentages are only part of it. Etsy pays you through Payoneer, requires a valid GSTIN, charges a one-time set-up fee and withholds some tax. This page sets out what Etsy's help pages say about each, then works one order in rupees.

The fees

Payment processing

5% + ₹25 on each order, stated in rupees. Source: How to accept payments as a seller in India.

Regulatory operating fee

0.05%, charged on item price plus shipping (and gift wrap). India is on Etsy's list of countries that charge it. Source: What is a regulatory operating fee.

Transaction and listing fees

The 6.5% transaction fee and the $0.20 USD listing fee come from Etsy's general fee pages. We found no India-specific figure for either. A listing is charged whether or not the item sells, expires after four months, and auto-renewing costs another $0.20. Sources: Etsy fee basics and Fees and taxes for selling on Etsy.

Offsite Ads

Only on orders Etsy attributes to its ads off Etsy, using a 30-day attribution window. 15% of the order amount, or 12% once your shop has made $10,000 USD or more in any consecutive 365 days, and never more than $100 USD per order. Below that threshold you can opt out. Source: How Etsy's Offsite Ads work.

Getting paid through Payoneer

GSTIN

A valid GSTIN is required. Etsy's India payments article says that without one Etsy will suspend your shop and withhold any deposits. It lists what you give when you set up payments. An individual gives PAN, GSTIN, date of birth, nationality, address, phone number, bank IFSC code and account number. A business gives its legal entity name, address, GSTIN and bank details, plus the owner's personal PAN. Source: How to accept payments as a seller in India.

The one-time set-up fee

The India payments article lists a one-time $10 USD set-up fee at onboarding. Etsy's general fees page describes the shop set-up fee as one-time and non-refundable, and says it varies by location. The calculator does not include it. Sources: How to accept payments as a seller in India and Fees and taxes for selling on Etsy.

Tax Etsy withholds

Etsy withholds and remits 0.5% TCS, which needs an active GSTIN, and TDS of 0.1% if you have a PAN or GSTIN, possibly 5% otherwise. The calculator subtracts neither, so for a real order take the amounts from your Etsy statement. This page is not tax advice. Source: What does Etsy withhold and remit to Indian tax authorities.

Who you can sell to

The India payments article says Indian shops enrolled in Etsy Payments cannot accept domestic sales at this time, and that new shops opened in India can only sell internationally.
